How Do Injectable Fillers Work?

As people age, the skin loses elasticity, which causes any shallow facial wrinkles to become deeper lines and creases. Actions like smiling or frowning cause you to use the same facial muscles time and time again to express those feelings, but due to the lost elasticity, they also result in facial wrinkles.

Just like Botox, Dysport is an injectable cosmetic treatment derived from Botulinum Toxin A to target your so-called “dynamic” facial wrinkles, referred to as such because they disappear once you stop moving your facial muscles. Expressions that cause dynamic facial wrinkles include smiling, laughing, squinting, and frowning – once you stop any of them, wrinkles disappear.

Using a fine needle, Dr. Kitagawa in Honolulu will inject Dysport into the targeted area for the purpose of reducing or softening dynamic facial wrinkles. More specifically, Dysport is injected directly into muscles below the skin of the targeted area. It then goes to work deadening the muscles that cause you to make facial expressions by deactivating the nerves that signal those muscles to move. This eventually reduces the appearance of your facial wrinkles or deep lines.

What Conditions Do Dermal Fillers Treat?

For frown lines between the eyebrows, the vertical lines that resemble an “11,” Dysport can be an excellent treatment. An area where it is particularly effective is on glabellar lines, the forehead lines caused by squinting, stress, or thinking hard about something

Another area where Dysport injections work quite well is the area around the corners of the eyes, commonly called crow’s feet.

Dysport vs Botox – How Are They Different?

Both the Botox and Dysport Botulinum toxin are the same, so the effects of both treatments are similar.

According to some Dysport reviews from both patients and medical professionals, it works faster and lasts longer. Its effects typically take effect in 2-5 days while those of Botox usually take 4-7 days. Regarding duration of results, some patients have reported results lasting over 12 months, although the normal time is 3-4 months, slightly longer than the 3 months average for Botox. However, keep in mind that these results are mixed and inconsistent.

A very important distinction is the amount of targeted area that each treatment covers. Once injected, Dysport seems to spread over a slightly larger area of the face – it’s reported that Dysport spreads three centimeters out from the injection site whereas Botox spreads only about one centimeter.

As a result, it’s crucial that a doctor of Dr. Kitagawa’s training, experience, and skills administer the Dysport injection. If not, then the Dysport medication could spread to an area where treatment isn’t wanted, which could have adverse results. For example, if the targeted area is crow’s feet around the eyes, improper injection of Dysport could cause it to spread to an unwanted area like the upper eyelid.

Because both treatments are used for similar conditions or facial areas, a consultation with Dr. Kitagawa or his staff to determine which is better for you is strongly recommended.

What to Expect During a Dermal Filler Treatment

Dysport is newer to the U.S. market than Botox, so fewer doctors have good experience or skill administering it, so make sure to choose a highly trained doctor with Dysport-specific experience.

A session can last 15-30 minutes, and it can be done at the Kitagawa Dermatology offices, so your daily routine suffers very little disruption. At the office, the Dysport injection site and the patient’s face are cleaned before the injections are made. It’s virtually painless, so no anesthesia is required, although some patients prefer to have a numbing cream rubbed on the area prior to receiving Dysport.

The full effect of Dysport injections won’t be noticed for several days, and the results appear within a week, depending on your goals and suitability of treatment.

Dysport is particularly effective on forehead lines and facial wrinkles, though it’s also a great choice for smoothing crow’s feet.
